All Natural Red Velvet Cake for Dogs

This red velvet cake for dogs recipe uses special all-natural ingredients that can be found in a grocery that carries all-natural products. Make sure that you buy products made in the USA. Otherwise, there could be additives that may be harmful to pets. Other countries do not necessarily have the stringent requirements that food products made in the USA must meet to satisfy FDA regulations.

We used all-natural vanilla powder and all-natural annatto powder to make our dog cupcakes.

Vanilla extract contains alcohol. Liquid vanilla requires more product – if you use powdered vanilla, you only need to use half the amount. Other vanilla products offer the “taste” of vanilla but are not all-natural vanilla.

Annato powder is made from seeds found inside the fruit of a plant called Bixa Orellana. This powder is reddish in color and will give these Valentine’s dog treats a red color, with the intensity of the red depending on how much annatto you add to the dog cake recipes.  Annatto seeds are covered in a thin layer of red-orange pulp. This pulp is removed from the seed and made into a powder. (Annatto powder is also known as achiote powder or achote powder.)

Items you will need:

  • 1 silicone bone-shaped cake pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk or mixing spoon
  • Measuring cup (1 cup size)
  • Measuring spoons

Editor’s Note: If you would like to make paw print dog cakes instead, use this paw silicone baking pan, or make small dog cupcakes as shown in the video.

Ingredients you will need:

  • 1 package All-Natural Cake and  Biscuit Mix
  • Annatto powder – add to desired color saturation
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil

Directions for red velvet cake for dogs:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Grease the bottom and sides of the silicone cake pan.
  • Stir dog cake mix, water, oil, and egg, until well blended.
  • Add in the natural vanilla powder and the annatto powder and stir well by hand.
  • Pour the mix into the bone-shaped pan.
  • Bake for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool before removing it from the pan.

You can make microwave valentines cake for dogs too. Omit the egg to modify the recipe for the microwave and pour the mix directly into a silicone dog cake pan or other microwave-safe containers.

The finished dog treats will look like the red velvet cake that is so popular among humans on Valentine’s Day. Decorate using dog treat frosting.

If you want to color it, add your icing color in, then stir until smooth and creamy. Frost the dog cake.

Add sprinkles on top if you desire. Then, let the frosting dry completely. It will dry hard and will not need to be refrigerated.
